A Fairway Full of Memories: Mike Returns to Harewood Downs

Sometimes, returning to a familiar place can unlock far more than memories. It can reconnect us with friendships, achievements and an important part of who we are.

For Mike, who lives at Haddenham Park, a recent return to Harewood Downs Golf Club became one of those very special moments.

A life full of stories

Mike has lived a wonderfully varied and interesting life. A retired journalist, his career placed him at the heart of a fast-paced world, including involvement in politics and many memorable moments along the way.

Away from journalism, another passion has played an important part in Mike’s story: golf.

For many years, Harewood Downs Golf Club was somewhere Mike could enjoy the game he loved while building friendships with people from his local community. It was a place filled with familiar faces, friendly competition, and plenty of stories shared both on and off the course.

As the Haddenham Park team spent time getting to know Mike and hearing more about his life, it became clear just how much this part of his story still meant to him.

And that sparked an idea.

Returning to somewhere special

It had been some time since Mike had visited Harewood Downs, so the Haddenham Park team contacted the golf club to see whether a return visit could be arranged.

The response couldn’t have been warmer.

Not only was Mike remembered as a former member, but his old golfing group still meets at the club every Wednesday lunchtime.

When the idea of returning for lunch and hopefully seeing a few familiar faces was shared with Mike, he was delighted.

Soon, a date was in the diary.

“I remember this…”

Walking back into Harewood Downs, there was plenty for Mike to rediscover.

The clubhouse may have been newly refurbished, but the memories remained.

Mike proudly pointed out some of the trophies he had won during his time at the club and even found his name displayed on the wall — a wonderful reminder of his own place within the club’s history.

After taking in the surroundings, Mike settled down for a drink.

It wasn’t long before someone recognised him.

A gentleman approached Mike, commenting that it had been some time since they had seen one another. Within moments, the conversation was flowing as memories were revisited and stories exchanged.

And he wasn’t the only one.

As Mike made his way into the restaurant for lunch with his son, another familiar face recognised him and stopped to say hello.

What had been planned as a simple lunch was becoming something much more meaningful.

More than a game of golf

Throughout the visit, Mike appeared completely at ease in familiar surroundings, enjoying conversations with people who remembered him and reconnecting with a community that had once been such a big part of his life.

The day wasn’t really about golf.

It wasn’t even about lunch.

It was about Mike.

It was about the journalist, the golfer, the friend, the father and the man whose experiences, passions and relationships continue to be part of who he is today.

At Haddenham Park, Continue Being Me means taking the time to discover these stories and understand what truly matters to each person. It means recognising that the passions, friendships and places that have shaped someone’s life don’t suddenly stop being important.

Sometimes that might mean trying something completely new.

Sometimes it means returning somewhere that feels wonderfully familiar.

For Mike, a Wednesday lunch at his old golf club offered the opportunity to reconnect with friendships, revisit achievements and rediscover memories from an important chapter of his life.

Because growing older doesn’t mean leaving your story behind.

It means continuing to write it.
